This Taos Wilderness map is seriously one of the best hiking maps I've used - and I've tried plenty. The 1:55,000 scale is perfect for actually using on the trail - detailed enough to see what you're doing but not so zoomed in that you're constantly unfolding and refolding a massive map. The waterproof and tear-resistant material is no joke - I've been caught in sudden rainstorms and the map held up perfectly, no smudging or falling apart. When folded, it's this compact 4x7 inch size that easily fits in your pocket, and it weighs under 2 ounces so you barely notice it's there. The 2023 updates mean all the trail routings and distances are current - no more following trails that don't exist anymore. It covers all the major wilderness areas - Wheeler Peak, Columbine-Hondo, Latir Peak, and the northern Carson National Forest. The GPS coordinates for trailheads and junctions are super accurate and work seamlessly with devices. The contour lines at 50-foot intervals with 250ft and 1000ft index contours give you a really clear picture of the terrain without being overwhelming. All the trails have segment distances marked, which is so helpful for planning your hike or knowing how much further you have to go. The printing is crisp and easy to read even in direct sunlight. Definitely worth it if you're planning to explore the Taos area - way more reliable than phone service that often disappears in the wilderness. The quality exceeds what you typically find at visitor centers too.
